The first day is a gentle 6-hour hike along Urubamba and Cuscichaca River. The campsite is Ayapata (3300 m / 10826 ft.) Day 2: Ayapata – Warmiwañuska – Chaquicocha.- After a long night’s sleep, wake up, breakfast, and start packing for the longest and most challenging day. You’ll climb two mountains; Dead Woman’s Pass (4 hours up and 2 hours down) and Runccuracay pass (2 hours up and 2 hours down). The campsite is Chaquicocha (dry lake, 3600 m / 11811 ft.). You’ll stargaze and appreciate the unobstructed views of the constellations. Day 3: Chaquiccocha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñaywayna.- Wake in your tent with a cup of coffee and get ready for the most relaxed and most beautiful day. The hiking today is only half-day (5-hours) visiting OPhuyupatamarca, Intipata, and Wiñaywayna Inca sites. The campsite is located just 2 hours from Machu Picchu. Day 4: Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco.- Wake early on the final and most important day. On the second day, your trekking team will wake you up with a cup of coffee or tea in your tent; then, you’ll have time to pack, have breakfast and start the second and most challenging day of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Today you’ll be conquering two mountains; the first mountains takes 4 hours to reach the top of Warmiwañuska or Dead Woman’s Pass (4215 m / 13829 ft.). Once you get to the summit, take some time to explore the area and enjoy the incredible vistas. It’s another 2 hours down to Pacaymayu Valley, where lunch is served. Fed and reenergized, you’ll start the 2-hour ascend to the second mountain, The Runcuraccay pass (4000 m/ 13123 ft), and another 2 hours down to the second campsite – on the way, you’ll stop in RuncuRaccay, Sayacmarca, Conchamarca Inca sites. The camp Chaquicocha (dry lake, 3600 m / 11811 ft.) is located in the cloud forest area, overlooking the Vilcabamba mountain range. After dinner, you can stargaze. After breakfast, you’ll start the most comfortable and most beautiful day of the trek; today, you’ll hike only 5 hours to the third campsite through different ecosystems and entering into the cloud forest. Throughout the day, you’ll see amazing panoramic views of the mountains, the Urubamba river, and spectacular archaeological sites. You’ll explore Phuyupatamarka, Intipata, and Wiñaywayna, and this last is the Campsite. After lunch at the campsite, you’ll have free time to shower or chase the llamas. Later in the afternoon, your tour guide will take you on tour to discover the hidden Inca Site of Wiñay Wayna, where we will have an informative tour of the temples, terraces and learn the history of the Incas. During dinner, you’ll say goodbye to your trekking team, give tips (optional) and sleep early for the next day. Day 4: Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco On the final and most important day, get up very early and start hiking for 1 hour to Sungate, here you’ll have the most incredible first view of Machu Picchu. After enjoying the view and sunrise over Machu Picchu, continue for one more hour to Machu Picchu Citadel. Once on the citadel, you’ll have time to use the toilets, take a coffee break, then your tour guide will take you on a comprehensive 3 hours tour along with the most beautiful places in Machu Picchu. WHAT TO DO IN CUSCO? Upon arrival to Cusco (3033 m / 11154ft), you need to take some time to acclimatize to the high altitude of the city. We recommend taking tours around the city like the city tour of Cusco, Sacred Valley Tour before taking the long trip to Machu Picchu. This way you’ll reduce the risk of getting altitude sickness. ALTITUDE SICKNESS OR “SOROCHE” At high altitude, the air is thinner and each body starts to react differently for the changes in oxygen levels. So basically there is less oxygen going into your body than you’re used to. To counteract you need to breathe faster and deeper and pump blood more rapidly in order to take the same amount of oxygen. This could be shocking to your body manifesting in various symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, poor appetite, lack of sleep. Cusco is at 11,152 feet (3,399 meters) so you may experience some symptoms, on the other hand, Machu Picchu is significantly lower at 7,972 ft (2,430 m). So Machupicchu isn’t really the potential problem. The best way to deal with the altitude is: Breathing exercise. Deep breaths will help you get more oxygen in your body. The number of visitors to the Inca trail has a limit of 500 per day and 2500 to Machu Picchu, according to UNESCO recommendations. Therefore, it is recommended to book in advance, especially during the high season. The trains are usually full so make your reservations in advance. You can book your visit to Machupicchu only or a ticket including the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains. As long as the name is the same we can update any passport number needed. If you have an old passport and a new one, please send us a photocopy of both. If you don’t have the old you can send any ID with your name. Remember to bring both passports when you travel.
